While the large-scale coffee plantations of Colombia, Brazil and Vietnam yield more coffee per hectare, the monoculture provides little room for other forms of life that once dwelled here. In contrast, the small-scale coffee plantations of individual farmers in Olmedo and Chaguarpamba provide ample space for fruit trees, not only providing welcome staple-foods of sweet and green bananas (plantain), oranges, lemons and mangos for the farming families, but the orchards are visited by swarms of birds, insects such as the 15 cm. … butterfly and in some cases even monkeys!
